Yeah, maybe the first episode did blow chunks (literally). Slow
pacing, too many booger and vomit jokes, and not enough focus on Ren &
Stimpy's personalities (it almost felt like a Games episode
sometimes). I did laugh at the gay jokes though.
But this new episode kicked ass. "Ren seeks help" will go down with
the classics. Ren truly goes psycho, and the mood reminds me of an old
film noir flick. This episode has the style of humor John K. is best
at, bizarre psychological melodrama.
Just a few things that made it classic:
* Mr.Horse- Dr. Mr. Horse is funny as hell, and put up a hell of a
fight. Sure, he didn't utter the classic "No sir" line, but he also
didn't do that in one of his other great appearances, as the Walrus
kidnapper in "Rubber Nipple Salesman."
*Crazy beating- Ren fighting Mr.Horse. I've never seen such a great
beating on TV since Tony beat Ralphie to death on the Sopranos.
*Ren's parents- Ren's dad a priest? That would explain alot, lol. And
Ren's mom was pretty hot for a bitch. The makeout scene was classic,
and I also liked when the dad gave ren the bible with a gun in it.
*Frog- That poor frog sure went through hell. It was cool when he
waved at Ren's mom and had a real frog paw. Kind of Mony Pythonesque.
It's little bizarre details like this that makes Spumco what the danes
call quality.
Of course, I believe in constructive criticism, so there are a few
minor things that bothered me.
*The looney tunes style end title- Parody doesn't fit with the Spumco
style. When I think of John K. and Spumco, bizarre visual and
psychological humor come to mind. Parody works in Spumco cartoons when
it's more subtle (like the fleischer style characters at the
beginning). Tacking on the looney tune style circle at the end seemed
cheesy, they should have just faded out. Leave mindless parody for
tiny toons shit.
*Ren's voice- Not really bad, it's just different. Maybe John K.'s
voice has changed, but he seems to have traded Peter Lore for Al
Pacino's Scarface. Not that its bad, the voice still cracks me up.
Anyway, all in all, a classic. I'd say all of the naysayers are proven
wrong. Sure, John K.'s only human, not the infallable god that Spumco
worshippers claim him to be. He does make the occasional crappy
cartoon, but even Tex Avery and Bob Clampett did that. He's still a
cartoon genius.
